Description

Amyl Bacteriological Mannitol, RM 309, is suitable for use in bacteriological culture media as a source of energy and for the differentiation of bacterial genera and species according to their ability to ferment or not ferment Mannitol.

For testing of fermentation reactions, Mannitol should be added to a carbohydrate free medium, containing an acid-base indicator such as phenol red or bromocresol purple, to a concentration of between 0.5 and 1% (w/v) and sterilised by filtration.

Inoculation of a suitable volume of the sterile, Mannitol containing medium, followed by incubation under controlled conditions for a suitable period of time, dependant upon the growth requirements of the organism under test, will provide a definitive answer to the organisms ability to ferment Mannitol, thereby providing one of the criteria required for establishment of the organisms identification.
