CAMPYLOBACTER (BLASER-WANG) SELECTIVE SUPPLEMENT

Lyophilised antimicrobial supplements for the preparation of selective media for the isolation of Campylobacter species from clinical, veterinary and environmental material.

Description

The recognition in the early 1970’s that Campylobacter species, (previously classified as Vibrio sp. and regarded as animal pathogens only), were in fact important human enteric pathogens, stimulated interest in the group of organisms, in particular their relative pathogenicity for human and animal species, together with their taxonomic relationships and classification.

Skirrow1, devised the first antibiotic containing selective supplement for the isolation of the thermophilic Campylobacter jejuni from faecal specimens of patients suffering from campylobacter enteritis, while other workers developed different combinations of antimicrobials to assist in their isolation.
