Description
Malt Extract Agar is used for the detection, isolation and enumeration of yeasts and moulds in a variety of samples including those of clinical origin.
When utilised in mould counts, a more acid pH is usually adopted to suppress the growth of bacterial flora, because no other inhibitor is included.
The formulation described is similar to that recorded by Galloway and Burgess.
This general purpose medium can also be used for the maintenance of fungal cultures, with the addition of 20% sucrose.
Malt Extract Broth encourages early and luxuriant growth of yeasts and moulds from small inocula. it is also used as a sterility test medium.
