MAMS AGAR

A medium used for the selective isolation and differentiation of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus from heavily contaminated specimens.

Product Code: AM794 Categories: , , ,

Description

Amyl MAMSA (Mannitol Aztreonam Methicillin Salt Agar), AM 794, is compounded according to the formulation developed by Perry et al1, responding to the need for a solid screening medium that would provide a more rapid recognition of the presence (or absence) of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in clinical material.

MAMSA is comprised of an enriched basal medium (Amyl Blood Agar Base B, AM 25), together with the carbohydrate mannitol, sodium chloride to a final concentration of 2.5%, and the acid-base indicator phenol red which, following mannitol fermentation and the production of acid by Staph.aureus, is responsible for the yellow colony colour. Two antimicrobial substances, aztreonam and methicillin, added as Amyl Supplement, SP 483, are selective agents, the former to inhibit growth of gram negative organisms and the latter to inhibit methicillin sensitive staphylococci.
