Amyl Milk Agar (Pseudomonas), AM 773, is based upon the formulation devised by Hastings1 and is specified in AS 4276.12 – 1995 , AS 4276.13 – 19952,3 and by the American Public Health Association4 (Brown and Scott Foster Modification) for use in the confirmation of the identity of strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from water samples by the Most Probable Number (MPN) method or by the Membrane Filtration Method. Peptones and beef extract provide growth requirements while osmolarity is maintained with sodium chloride. Casein digestion is accomplished by the majority of strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and becomes apparent as a clearing of the medium around the colonies of the organism after 24 hours incubation at 35°C.
