STAPHYLOCOCCAL SALT ISOLATION BROTH

A medium used for the selective isolation of Staphylococcus aureus from dairy products and other food sources.

Description

Amyl Staphylococcal Salt Isolation Broth, AM 769, is compounded according to the formula developed by Takahashi and Kamei1, for the isolation of Staphylococcus aureus from dehydrated dairy products and other food materials.

The medium contains peptone as a source of nitrogen, dextrose as a carbon source while beef extract provides vitamins and growth factors. The level of sodium chloride in the medium renders it inhibitory to all but the most salt tolerant of micro-organisms, such as Staphylococcus aureus and other species of staphylococci. Glycine is an inhibitor of gram negative organisms, while phenol red is incorporated into the medium as an indicator of acid production following fermentation of dextrose by metabolizing staphylococci.
