LAURYL TRYPTOSE BROTH with FLUOROGEN S1

A medium for the rapid detection and confirmation of Escherichia coli in water, food and dairy products using a fluorogenic procedure

Description

Amyl Lauryl Tryptose Broth with Fluorogen S1 (4-methylumbelliferyl-β-D-glucuronide or MUG) is a variation of the Standards Methods formulation1,2 used to detect, identify and enumerate Escherichia coli in potable waters, wastewaters, foodstuffs and dairy products. The presence of E.coli in these products is an indicator or unsanitary conditions or of faecal contamination.

The medium contains peptone as a source of nitrogen, lactose as a fermentable carbohydrate and a source of carbon, potassium phosphates as a buffering system, sodium chloride for the maintenance of osmolarity and sodium lauryl sulphate as a selective agent to inhibit the growth of non coliform organisms. The addition of Fluorogen S1 or MUG as it is more commonly known, provides an indicator system for the rapid recognition of growth of E.coli, obviating the need for further confirmatory testing.
