m-PA-C AGAR

Used for the selective recovery and enumeration of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from water. Conforms with Australian Standards specifications.

Description

Amyl m-PA-C Agar, AM 100-C, is formulated as described by Brodsky and Ciebini1 and is the end result of a series of modifications2,3 from the m-PA agar originally devised by Levin and Cabelli4 as a selective membrane filter medium for Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The medium is specified in the Australian Standard for Water Microbiology, for the selective recovery and enumeration of strains of Ps.aeruginosa from water5, and is recommended for the same purpose by the American Public Health Association.6

Yeast extract, lysine, xylose, sucrose and lactose provide carbon, nitrogen, vitamins and growth factors for bacterial metabolism. Osmotic equilibrium is maintained by sodium chloride and ferric and magnesium salts provide essential ions, while phenol red alters the colour of the medium from red to yellow in response to the production of acid from carbohydrate fermentation. Kanamycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits growth of susceptible gram positive and gram negative bacteria, while the presence of nalidixic acid inhibits the growth of susceptible gram negative bacteria.
