Amyl Bacteriological Maltose, RM 309, is suitable for use in bacteriological culture media as a source of energy and for the differentiation of bacterial genera and species according to their ability to ferment or not ferment maltose.

For testing of fermentation reactions, maltose should be added to a carbohydrate free medium, containing an acid-base indicator such as phenol red or bromocresol purple, to a concentration of between 0.5 and 1% (w/v) and sterilised by filtration.

Inoculation of a suitable volume of the sterile, maltose containing medium, followed by incubation under controlled conditions for a suitable period of time, dependant upon the growth requirements of the organism under test, will provide a definitive answer to the organisms ability to ferment maltose, thereby providing one of the criteria required for establishment of the organisms identification.
