EC Broth is used for detection of faecal and non-faecal coliforms present in water, milk, shell-fish and other materials.
EC Broth was developed by Hajna and Perry1 to detect faecally contaminated water. Tests are performed at 37°C and 44.5°C because coliforms of faecal origin are capable of growing at higher temperatures than coliforms from other sources. Growth in a tube incubated at 44.5°C is indicative of a coliform of faecal origin.
