Egg Yolk Tellurite is a tellurite, egg yolk emulsion prepared for use with Baird-Parker Agar Base for the detection and enumeration of coagulase positive staphylococci.
Egg yolk and tellurite are responsible for the differentiation of coagulase positive staphylococci.
Lipolysis and proteolysis of egg yolk result in the characteristic ring of opacity within a clear zone.
The reduction of tellurite to tellurium produces colonies with varying degrees of blackening (grey-black to black). The two characteristic features serving as an index for a positive coagulase reaction.
