Description
Amyl Iron Sulphite Agar, AM 67, is a modification of a medium developed by the National Canners Association of America1,2 for the detection of anaerobic, sulphite reducing , thermophilic food spoilage organisms in canned foods. The medium is incorporated into Australian Standard AS 1766.3.7 for the detection of thermophilic anaerobes in hermetically sealed containers.3
The reduction of sulphite ions in the medium by sulphite reducing bacteria forms hydrogen sulphide, producing black ferric sulphide thereby providing a means of recognition of the presence of these organisms.
