ROGOSA AGAR

A selective medium for the isolation and enumeration of Lactobacilli found in clinical specimens and some foodstuffs.

Product Code: AM157 Categories: , ,

Description

Rogosa Agar, a variant of the formulation described by Rogosa et al., was designed for the selective isolation and enumeration of lactobacilli, particularly from saliva, but also from faeces and vaginal specimens and lactobacilli isolated from certain foodstuffs.

It is a suitable medium for antibiotic sensitivity testing and presumptive identification of lactobacilli.

Rogosa Agar is classified as an enrichment medium due to it’s highly nutritional composition. The selective agents sodium acetate and ammonium citrate in conjunction with the low pH of the traditional formula inhibits the growth of streptococci, moulds and other oral flora.

When the medium is adjusted to pH 6.2, the whole range of lactic acid bacteria are permitted to grow.

Dextrose is incorporated as the fermentable carbohydrate.

Sabine and Vaselekos reported that the addition of tomato juice (20% v/v), with a corresponding reduction in water content greatly enhanced the recovery of Lactobacillus acidophilus.
