CETRIMIDE AGAR

Cetrimide Agar is a selective medium for the isolation and presumptive identification of Ps. aeruginosa.

Description

Amyl Media AM 27 Cetrimide Agar is based on a slight modification of the Medium A formulation of King, Ward and Raney for the demonstration of pyocyanin by Ps. aeroginosa, and with the addition of cetrimide, it closely resembles the formulation given in the United States Pharmacopoeia.

Being a quaternary ammonium, cationic detergent, cetrimide causes nitrogen and phosphorous to be released from bacterial cells other than Ps. aeruginosa. When used at a lower concentration, it becomes less selective and other pseudomonads grow – see AM143 Pseudomonas Agar Base.

Other ingredients in the medium are present to enhance production of fluorescein and pyocyanin. Pyorubin may also be produced.
