An antibiotic supplement which, when added to Amyl Columbia Blood Agar, produces a selective medium for the isolation of Gardnerella vaginalis.
Amyl Gardnerella vaginalis selective supplement is formulated according to Ison1 et al., who used the selective medium for the isolation of Gardnerella vaginalis from the vaginal discharges of women suffering from bacterial vaginitis. The antibiotic combination of Gentamicin and Nalidixic acid inhibits the growth of normal vaginal and faecal flora, while Amphotericin suppresses the growth of fungal organisms, particularly Candida albicans.
